Buying a house in Portland – or anywhere else for that matter – is a big decision. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you’re in the market to buy a house.
1. Be an informed buyer. Understand the different Portland neighborhoods, schools, commuting issues, tax rates, noise, mortgages, interest rates and other factors that go into making a good decision. The US Dept. of Housing has tons of useful information. It’s a great place to begin.
2. Make a list of needs and wants and desirable neighborhoods. Visit the Portland neighborhood guide for information on Portland neighborhoods.)
3. If this is your first home, learn what you can about first time home buyers. There’s a lot you can learn about home buying programs in Oregon, here.
4. Understand the mortgage process.
5. Get your finances in order and clean up any errors on your credit report. The sooner you begin, the better.
6. Determine how much house you can afford. (See the mortgage rate and mortgage loan tools, here.)
7.Get pre-approved for a specific loan amount.
8. Get friends and acquaintances to recommend an agent.
